The dress and boot outfit combo is so chic and effortless looking; it’s also practical for those spring and fall days when it’s not quite warm enough for sandals, but with all the different boot and dress styles to choose from, it’s a tricky look to master.

Selecting the right boot style is crucial for creating the perfect dress and boot outfit, so here are 13 points to consider when choosing your boots:

1. Consider your body shape when choosing the right boots

It would be remiss of me not to mention considering your body shape when choosing the right boots, so here are a few points to think about when selecting the best boots for your body shape:

Consider where the top of the boot shaft hits your leg, as this will draw attention to that area. If you feel self-conscious about wide calves, you might want to avoid choosing a boot that hits your calf length.

Similarly, if you have chunky ankles you don’t like, you might find a low cut or taller shaft ankle boot works better for you.

Another point to think about is the heel type. If you carry your weight on your bottom half, a block heel or chunky heel will be the most flattering as it’s balanced with your proportions. A thin heel will generally look more proportionate to your frame if you have slim legs and narrow ankles.

Lastly, consider the toe shape. A pointed or almond toe can lengthen and slim your legs. In contrast, a round toe can shorten your legs.

2. Consider the shaft height of the boots

Boot shaft height is something to consider for both your leg shape (as I mentioned above) and the dress style. For example: Do you want to show any leg between the dress and the boot? If not, a knee-high or over-the-knee boot might be the best option for your dress. If you want to make a feature of the boots, an ankle boot could be a great choice.

3. Think about the width of the boot shaft.

A neat-fitting boot with a tight shaft will slim and elongate your legs. This is a great choice if you’re pairing boots with a midi dress, as a mid-calf dress can often be quite an unflattering length, cutting you across the widest part of your leg.

A wide boot shaft looks more casual, so it makes a great choice if you want to dress down your outfit. Slouchy tall bots are another great choice for a more casual dress outfit.

Wide-shaft boots tend to look better when there is either a lot or no space between the hem of the dress and the top of the boot. When there’s only a small gap, the proportions can look off, so that is something else to consider.

They also compliment a fitted dress more than a loose floaty style, simply because this balances the proportions better.

4. The toe shape matters when choosing boots to wear with dresses.

Boots come in a huge range of different toe shapes, from square toe, to round toe, to pointed toe, to almond toe.

Square toes are still having a moment, as are pointed toes, and for good reason – they are two of the most flattering toe styles around. Both will elongate and slim your leg, making a great option for pairing with dresses. They’re also a great way to update your boot and dress outfits, as a round toe can look a little dated.

Toe shape can also affect how casual or dressy your outfit is. A pointed or square toe offers a more polished look, while a round or almond toe shape can look more casual, so that is something to bear in mind.

5. Think about the heel height when choosing boots to wear with a dress

The heel height of your boot will depend very much on comfort and preference. It’s also determined by the length of your dress (a maxi dress might require a heel to prevent it from dragging on the floor), but other than that, the three points to consider when choosing the boot style to wear with your dress are:

A high heel will elongate and slim your leg, dress up a casual dress, and change the proportions of your outfit, whether that’s to balance your frame or align with the rule of thirds, and it often looks neater.

A low heel will also elongate and slim your legs but can look less dressy, making it a great option for smart-casual outfits.

A flat heel typically won’t offer any benefits in terms of your body shape; however, a flat boot is a great option if you want to style a fancy or formal dress for a more casual occasion. It will add some edge and contrast to a feminine outfit. And flat boots come in the broadest range of styles, from Chelsea boots to biker boots, so you’ll have lots to play with.

6. Choose the right heel type to wear with your boot and dress outfit.

Heel types are often overlooked. As I mentioned, different heel types work better for different body types, but it’s also something to consider when choosing which boot to pair with your dress.

Platform heels add a fashionable edge to an outfit; they’re also a practical option if you want to wear heels but find them uncomfortable. Platform booties pair well with most dress styles and lengths, but my favorite is a floaty maxi dress paired with a tall platform boot.

Block heels are another option if you find walking in heels difficult. Like a platform heel, they’ll add fashion flare to your dress outfit and pair well with most dresses, making them a great staple in your wardrobe.

Kitten heels don’t suit everyone, particularly if you carry your weight on your bottom half (they can look a little squashed on bottom-heavy body shapes), but if you’re not bothered about that, they can add a little rock or boho feel to your outfit.

Cuban heels will add a little Western flair to your outfit.

Cone heels are a little out of favor at the moment, so they could make an outfit look dated, but they’re a fun heel to go for if you don’t aspire to look modern!

And then you have the statement heels – from angular to decorative (flowers, spheres, etc…) – dressing ‘rules’ go out the window with these – it’s all about the shoe. Pair them with a more minimalist dress, something that gives the boots the space to shine.

7. What’s the occasion you’re dressing for?

The boot style you opt for can affect how dressy or casual your outfit looks. As I mentioned, a flat ankle boot can dress a look down, while a heel dresses it up. A boot with a wide shaft can make a dress look more casual, and a neater fitting boot shaft dresser.

Having said that, feel free to ignore the norms and step outside your comfort zone by mixing things up a little. Play around with contrasting styles and textures, and combine pieces that wouldn’t typically be worn together.

8. Choose a boots and dress combo that works for your personal style.

This might seem obvious, but it’s easy to be swayed by a trending boot style that doesn’t align with your personal style. And while it’s essential to develop your style and try new things, do so with caution.

Check in with yourself to make sure you’re purchasing a pair of boots because you like them, not just because they’re trending. Otherwise, you’ll end up with boots you don’t enjoy wearing or don’t feel like ‘you.’

9. Think about the dress fabric and boot combo

It can be fun to combine clothing from different seasons. For example, a lightweight floaty dress can look fantastic when paired with chunky biker boots. However, some dress fabrics don’t pair well with fall or winter boots.

Linen is the hardest to combine with boots, and cheesecloth is another. That’s not to say it can’t be done; it just takes a little more effort in the styling department.

10. Consider your environment and what you’ll do while wearing the outfit.

This is probably obvious, but it warranted mentioning – you’ll want to consider what you’re doing and where you will be walking. If you’re walking a lot on grass, then a flat boot, a block heel, or a platform boot will be the easiest to walk in.

If it’s likely to rain, a boot with a good sole or solid heel will be best. You might also avoid a suede boot.

If it’s cold, I swear by an over-the-knee boot dress combination; it’s a dress and boot outfit that keeps your legs warm and incredibly stylish when it’s cold outside. However most taller boots will offer you more warmth and protection against the elements.

11. The boot color matters when wearing a dress with boots.

It doesn’t matter whether you choose the perfect boot style to wear with your dress if the color is wrong. Black booties might seem the safest option, but it doesn’t always work.

If you want a neutral, there are plenty of other options, such as cream, grey, olive green, nav boots, brown boots, or tan. And then there are neutral prints like snakeskin and leopard print—these pair well with most prints and colors.

If you need some rules to guide you, here are 3:

1/ If the dress is printed:

• Choose a color from the dress that matches your boots. Don’t assume that black goes with everything. It doesn’t

2/ If the dress is plain:

• Consider pairing it with a contrasting neutral for a chic, minimal look.
• Contrast the color for something more striking.
• Dabble in some color drenching – and dress head to toe in various shades of the same color.
• If in doubt, go for a metallic! Metallic shades are one of the most versatile neutrals, reflecting the color you team them with

3/ If you want to wear an animal print boot, I fully support that! Just be mindful that having a color in both the boot and the dress will tie them together so they clash harmoniously.

Whatever color you choose, I recommend a hue with a similar tone as the dress so they complement each other (for more on how to combine colors and put outfits together, see this post).

12. Get the proportions right when choosing boots to wear with a dress

The simplest way to create the correct proportions for your outfit is to follow the ‘rule of thirds’. I go into this in detail in this post, but here’s a quick summary:

Photographers and artists use the rule of thirds to compose the most aesthetically pleasing image. They do this by breaking their canvas (or viewfinder) into a grid of nine; they then place the focal point of the image or painting in the left-right third of the frame to the top or bottom third of the frame.

We can do the same when we build an outfit. We can create a perfectly composed outfit by building it in three equally proportioned parts or a ratio of 1:2 or 2:1, as illustrated below.

Lastly, the boot style you choose is crucial to the success of your dress outfit.

There are various boot styles available, from Chelsea boots to platform boots to biker boots, etc.… and a combination of options open to you; you could contrast styles by combining a heavy combat boot with a feminine, floaty dress.  Or you can match the boot style to the dress and pair a neat, feminine boot with a feminine floaty dress.

You might want to avoid matching your dress theme to your boot style (such as a western dress with a cowboy boot) as it can look a little costume like.

1/ Knee-High Boots with dresses

Tall boots are a classic, and for good reason: they’re pretty timeless and work well with most dress lengths and most occasions. They’re a great option for cooler weather, but they look equally good with bare legs and a mini in that in-between weather.

How to Stay Warm When Wearing Boots and Dresses

Layering is key. Wear tights (even better, fleece-lined tights), leggings, or thermal layers under your dresses. My go-to for thermals is Uniqlo; I find them thin enough to layer invisibly under my dresses but warm enough to notice.

Skinny jeans are another fantastic item to layer under your dresses. As are leather leggings. They add a little edge, and I love the contrast in textures.

And layer a cropped sweater over the top. If it sits too long over your dress and feels a little frumpy, wrap a belt around your waist (over the dress, but under the knit), then tuck the hem of the sweater under the belt to shorten it and create some waist definition.
