These are the 3 best pants for a pear shape in 2026

Every season, I order and try on almost 30 pairs of pants in a bid to find the best styles for a pear shape. For reference, my waist is 26 inches, and my hips are 40 - that's a 14-inch difference. These three pairs of pants fit me without any waist gaping... and look great, too!

Curve Love A&F Slone Linen-Blend Tailored Wide Leg Pant

Abercrombie & Fitch

These pants are perfection.  They're part of Abercrombie & Fitches 'Curve Love' range, which means the wasit nips in to fit yours perfectly.  I have a pair in linen that I've lived in all summer. They're comfortable, a good price, and they look incredible on your curves.

Wide leg pants are a must for pear shapes, but not all fit well around your waist. These pants do!  They come in a wide range of colors, and they come in petite, standard, tall and plus sizes.

The Utility Barrel pant

Everlane

These hug the waist perfectly!  The barrel leg is a gentle curve that almost reads as a straight-leg pant on your pear shape. These are a fantastic casual, everyday pant that fit well, and look great.

What is a pear shaped body?

4 illustrations of pear shaped women in different sizes, and different shapes

I’ve written a comprehensive blog post about the pear body shape over here that shares everything you need to know about your pear shape, including the common (and less common) characteristics, and all clothing styles that are a flattering fit on a pear shape, but here’s a quick summary:

Pear-shaped bodies feature narrow shoulders, wide, curvy hips that are noticeably broader than the shoulders, and a defined waistline.

You’ll often feel bottom-heavy and struggle to find bottoms that hug your gorgeous curves, but with the right clothing choices, you can showcase your pear-shaped frame and create balance.

Looking for a comprehensive guide on all things pear body shape?  This post covers everything from clothes to wear and clothes to avoid, to pear shaped celebrities.

Not all pear shaped women are only pear-shaped…you might overlap with another bodyshape:

While there are 4 main female body types (pear body type, hourglass shape, column shape, and apple shape), few of us fit neatly into one of those categories. Most of us have characteristics that align with several different body shapes. For example:

When you’re predominantly pear-shaped, but you also have a large bust, you might find your pear shape overlaps with the hourglass body shape (this is one of the most common combinations, and is why so many women struggle to identify if they have an hourglass or pear shape!).

If you believe you’re pear shaped, but you’re slim, and the difference between your hips and shoulder width is negligible, then you are likely a combination of a pear shape and a column shape.

An illustration of different ypes of pear body shapes

Knowing what body shape your shape aligns with is a fantastic starting point for learning what works for you and why, but try to avoid getting too bogged down with the labels.

The most important thing is understanding your shapes, characteristics and proportions and focusing on dressing those.

Why do pear-shaped figures struggle to find pants that fit?

Before you can solve the problem of finding pants that fit, it’s essential to understand why you’re experiencing this frustration.

So, the reason you struggle to find pants that work for your pear shape is because your waist is so much smaller than your hips. This is the case no matter what size you are. Your waist is smaller than your hips, and pants and jeans aren’t typically cut to fit curves.

This means that pants often fit your hips and thighs, OR your waist, but rarely both. And going up or down a size only compounds the problem. And so you end up wearing pants that look too tight or that gape at the waistband.

It’s no wonder so many pear-shaped women hate their lower half. Not only is it challenging to find pants and jeans that fit, but you’re forced to wear ill-fitting clothes that make you look (and feel) bad.

Here are 3 valuable tips for styling your pear shape:

I’ve written a comprehensive guide all about styling and dressing the pear shape over here, so I highly recommend you check that out. It covers styling tips for a pear shape and the most and least flattering clothes for a pear shape across all clothing categories.

But for now, here are my top 3 styling tips for a pear shape:

1 – Avoid overly baggy clothing if you have a pear shape

You might think that wearing baggy clothes hides your pear shape…and it may well do that, but it also hides your defined waist, your beautiful curves, and your smaller top half.

Choosing clothes that fit your shape well and showcase your curves will make you look slimmer, stylish, and more modern.

2 – Choose high-rise bottoms when you have a pear shaped figure

If you want to balance your silhouette, and showcase your waist, choose bottoms with a high rise to elongate your legs, cinch you in, and balance your torso.

And opt for tops that have volume or structure on the shoulders to broaden your shoulders and balance your hips.

If you’re not bothered about balancing your frame, I still recommend skirts and pants with a high rise as they simply fit you much better than a mid – low rise.

3 – Try to embrace your shape and your gorgeous curves

Discover what you like about your shape, and show that off!

Not only is it far better for your mental health to readjust the focus of getting dressed to show off your shape rather than hiding what you don’t like, but it will also have the added bonus of drawing the eye away from the areas you’re less happy with.

Pear shapes have gorgeous curvaceous bottom half, and a waistline that is defined, if you can embrace these fabulous qualities, getting dressed and looking good will be so much easier.

And just think, all those apple and column-shaped women would LOVE to have those curves…how lucky are you?!

5 Key points to consider when choosing pants for your pear shape

These points aren’t just about choosing pants that flatter; this is also about finding pants that fit:

1 – Pear shaped women should choose Curvy fit pants

My absolute number one tip for finding pants that fit your pear shape is to look for pants in a Curvy-fit. I don’t mean plus-size pants (unless, of course, you are plus-sized); the curvy fit I am referring to is pants that are specifically designed with a pear shape in mind. They feature a smaller waist and more hip and thigh room, ensuring a better overall fit.

Pants in a curvy fit will hug your waist and fit your hips and thighs. They are the holy grail of pants, and once you’ve tried a curvy fit pant, you will NEVER wear anything else.

My top brands for curvy-fit pants are Madewell, Everlane, Paige Flaunt, Abercrombie and Fitch, and J Crew. But I have many more recommendations further down this post.

2 – Look for high-rise pants if you’re pear shaped

High-rise pants are ideal for pear shapes as they emphasize the waist, create a longer leg line, and shorten your torso – this will make your pear shaped frame look more in proportion and your lower body less heavy.

High-rise pants also have more potential to fit you well as they’re often cut a little tighter in the waistband.

Choosing a low rise will shorten your legs, hide your defined waist, and make your hips and thighs look wider.

3 – Look for pants that elongate your legs if you have a pear shape

This could be anything from choosing a high rise pant or a wide leg pant to opting for pants styles with vertical details or shaping to elongate the leg such as vertical stripes.

4 – Pear shapes look best in fluid, lightweight fabrics.

Unlike stiff, thick fabrics that add bulk and weight, these will skim your curves and move with you.

5- Pants that have volume below the knee are one of the most flattering styles for a pear shape

Pants such as boot-cut, flare, skinny flare, baby boot – all these styles help balance wider hips by adding volume below the knee. High-rise versions are particularly effective at creating a proportionate look.

3 Tips for shopping online for pants as a pear shaped woman

a woman curled up on a sofa, shopping online for the best pants for a pear shape

1 – Look a little closer at the product photos:

Pay close attention to the jeans and ask yourself:

  • Does the waistband look like it has some shape that will hug your waist?
  • Does the waistband fit the model well? If the pants look a little loose (even the tiniest amount), they will likely gape at your waist.

2 – Pay attention to the product description

How jeans look on a model doesn’t always accurately depict the shape of the jeans.  Plus, jeans look different on different body shapes, so it’s important to read the description of the jeans rather than solely relying on the photos.

You’ll want to look for mentions of fitted at the waist/fitted waistband, curved, skims hips etc…

It’s also worth looking at the fabric content -Something with a little stretch is more likely to fit you than a pair of jeans with no stretch.

3- Read the customer reviews!

Many retailers allow you to filter reviews by body shape (J Crew and Anthropologie are brilliant at this), so when it’s possible, filter reviews by ‘curvy on the bottom’, or ‘pear’ and see what those buyers thought. If waist gaping is mentioned often, avoid them.

If filtering reviews isn’t possible, scan through them quickly.

These 8 pants styles look best on a pear-shaped body

These pants will be the most flattering, but more importantly, they will be the best-fitting pants for your pear shape.

I know that many of you are focused on hiding or minimizing your pear shape – and many of these pants styles will do that, but I’ve also included these pants because I know that they will fit your pear shape the best, too.

I also want to reiterate that opting for pants in a curvy fit will guarantee a perfect fit, but if you can’t source the style you want in a curvy fit, these will be a fantastic next best.

I’m often asked, “Should pear shapes wear wide-leg pants?” and my answer is “yes!”. Wide-leg pants are my favorite pants for pear shapes.

The ultimate style for a pear shape is A high-rise wide-leg pant that hugs your waist and flares out to skim your hips and thighs.

The full leg line and loose fit will narrow wide hips, elongate legs, highlight your defined waist, and pair perfectly with neat-fitting tops that showcase your upper body.

Flared pants are great for pear shapes.

Flares look great on pear shapes. The fullness below the knee balances a pear shapes hips and enhances your curves. They’ll fit you great, and you’ll look gorgeously curvaceous. This is a style of pants that makes you love your curves rather than want to cover them up!

Bootcut pants and mini boot cut pants work well for pear shapes.

Bootcut pants are a great style if you’re wary of wearing flares. They have a similar effect of flares – they balance your hips and define your waist, but they are less dramatic than a pair of flares.

Copped flares are a fun alternative to full length flares for a pear shape

I love a cropped flare on a pear shape – Madewell’s Curvy Kick Out Crop Jeans are one of my favorites. Wear this style in a high-rise; otherwise, your legs may look shorter, making your frame look more bottom-heavy.

High rise pants are a pear shape’s best friend

High-rise pants and high-rise jeans aren’t a style as such, but they are important enough to get a mention! A high rise is more likely to hug your waist; it will also highlight your defined waistline, elongate your legs, and showcase your curves.

A slim leg pant looks great on a pear shaped figure

If you’re a pear shape who doesn’t like wearing skinny-leg pants or skinny jeans (I personally love them on a pear!), try a slim leg pant. These still hug your legs, but they have a slightly wide ankle, so may highlight your hips a little less.

Palazzo pants and A-line pants are perfect for pears.

Palazzo pants or a-line cut pants are a great option for pear shapes. They make a fantastic statement for evening events but look equally as stunning in the summer.

The fluid fabric is forgiving and flattering, and like an a line skirt, the shape will hug your small waist and skim your hips. Pair a palazzo pant with a fitted top to highlight your smaller top half.

Culottes are good options for pear-shaped women.

So many women worry they can’t wear culottes for fear of looking short or wide, but I don’t support that. There are so many other factors to consider, such as the rise and the fabric, that anyone can wear culottes, especially pear shapes!

Culottes will flatter your pear shape curves and highlight your waist. And if you opt for a high-rise, they will shorten your torso to balance your bottom-heavy frame.

If you’re still worried about looking short in culottes, pair them with a low-high heel.

The best pants styles for plus size pear

All the above styles will look fabulous on a plus-size pear shape, but here are some tips to help you find pants that work for your pear shape.

  1. Opt for a stretchy fabric that provides comfort and fit.
  2. Flared or wide-leg styles will be the most flattering in terms of showcasing your curves.
  3. Choose pants with clean lines and minimal embellishments that don’t add unnecessary bulk.

Here are some pants you might want to avoid wearing as a pear shape

Before I go any further, I want to emphasize that you do not and should not have to balance your frame or narrow your hips. You should wear what you want, regardless of whether I or any other guide tells you.

However, when you come across a pair of pants that you love but that don’t look as good as you’d hoped they would, don’t fit well, or gape at the waist, it’s really valuable to have an understanding of why that might be so you can choose a better alternative.

Whether you want to narrow your hips and balance your frame, or you want to understand why something doesn’t work so you can make better choices, here is a list of the least flattering and worst fitting pants for pear body shapes:

An illustration of 6 pant styles that do not look good on a pear shaped women: tapred leg, paperbag pants, cargo pants, pleated pants, low rise pants, and pin tuck pants

Straight leg and straight cut pants rarely fit a pear shape

All those web articles that say pear shapes look great in straight-leg pants and straight-leg jeans? Semi-true – While you will look good in a straight leg, they are the most challenging pant to find in the right fit.

This is because (and the clue is in the name) they are cut straight. And you, my lovely, are curvy.

If you’re looking for straight-leg jeans or straight-leg pants that will fit your shape, look to the brands that sell curvy fits. My No. 1 brand for curvy-fit straight-leg pants is Madewell.

Paperbag- pants can be unflattering on a pear shape

Any pant style that adds volume below the waistband, such as paper-bag pants, will add more weight to your bottom half. This can make your pear shape look less balanced and more pear-shaped, so if you want to look more balanced and less pear-shaped, you will want to avoid paper bag pants.

If you’re not bothered about looking pear-shaped or bottom-heavy, paper bag pants are a great style because they have a defined waistline that can be cinched in with a waist tie.

I also want to add that opting for a paper-pag waist pant in a wide leg or straight leg will be a little more flattering as the volume in the leg helps to balance the volume the pants add to your hips and thighs.  Something like this could work well.

Cargo pants are less flattering for pear shapes

Cargo pants have multiple large pockets that sit on the hips and thighs. These will add bulk to your widest point, so they may make you feel heavier.

If your focus isn’t on hiding your curvy bottom half, then cargo pants can work well as they often have a waist adjuster at the side or back of the waistband that allows for a better fit and less waist gaping.  Here are some great cargo pant options for pear shapes:

Cigarette-leg pants and other tapered-leg styles can be unflattering for pear shapes

Pants that narrow at the ankle, including barrel leg pants, peg leg pants, and cigarette leg pants, can often make your hips and thighs look larger, so if your goal is to make your hips and thighs look narrower, then you may want to avoid pants with a tapered leg.

If that doesn’t bother you, I highly recommend these tapered pants in a curve fit.

Low-rise pants don’t work well for pear body shapes.

A low rise will fit you better, but they can look less flattering on a pear shape as they shorten legs and elongate a torso.

As a pear shape, your torso is probably longer than your legs. If you wear a low-rise pant, this will be exaggerated – making your frame look more bottom-heavy, your waist less defined, and your hips and thighs wider.

Avoid Front Seam or Pintuck Pants if you have a pear shape.

Pants with a seam running down the center of the leg will often highlight the contour of the leg, so if you feel self-conscious about the shape of your leg, pants with a pin tuck or front seam may highlight this.

6 ways to improve the look of pants that don’t flatter a pear shape.

If you already own pants that aren’t the most flattering, or you love some of the styles listed above and want to make them work for your pear shape, here are some style tips to help you make unflattering pants work for you.

If a pair of pants is making you look too bottom-heavy for your liking, try these tips:

1 – Team unflattering pants with tops that broaden your narrower shoulders or draw attention to your smaller upper body.

Design elements that work well are:

  • Shoulder pads
  • Puff sleeves
  • High necklines
  • Statement shoulders

2 – Draw attention to your waist:

  • Pair them with crop tops to shorten your torso and draw attention to your waist.
  • Add a belt.
  • Choose the same style in an ultra-high rise to elongate your legs and enhance your defined waist.

3 – Draw attention to the upper half of the body

A great way to do this is with a statement top in a print or a bold color or with interesting necklines.

4 – Consider your footwear.

For example, a heel will lengthen your legs, as will a pointed toe

5 –  Dark colors recede, and light colors come to the forefront

Wearing a less flattering pair of pants in a dark hue will be flattering and slimming.

6  – Use layering and accessories to draw attention upwards.

7 – If your pants are gaping at the waist a little

If your pants gape a little at the waist, a quick and effective solution is to bring the waist area in with a button pin.  These are the ones I use, they come in a variety of metal colors so they fit with almost any pair of pants of jeans.

The best jeans for pear shapes

Jeans are the biggest frustration for pear shapes. I’m often asked, “what is the most flattering jean cut for a pear shape?” so I’ve devoted an entire blog post to finding the the perfect pair of jeans for a pear shape. I regularly update it each season with my top picks for pear shapes, so I recommend heading over if you’re looking for style tips on finding your perfect jeans.

Final thoughts

To say that I understand your frustration with pants is an understatement. I live and breathe your frustrations daily. Before I understood fit and cut, I would spend hours endlessly shopping for pants to fit me, only to end up disappointed and upset. I couldn’t understand what was wrong with me, why everyone else could find pants to fit when everything I tried on was tight around my hips and thighs and gaping at the waist. If I ever wanted to wear pants, they were unflattering and poor-fitting, and I felt crap about myself.

Fast forward to today, and I now understand my shape (and I don’t hate my curvy bottom half anymore), and I know what pants styles work for me and where to get them from. I enjoy getting dressed, I have variety in my collection, and I feel good about myself.

Not only that, but I have 18 plus years of experience helping pear-shaped women shop for clothes they love wearing.

The tips and info in this blog post come from years of experience, and my hope is that the tips I’ve shared in this blog post will help you to finally find pants for your shape that look good, fit well, and make you feel amazing.

Good luck, and let me know if you have any questions or find any gems!
