As a personal stylist with over 10 years of experience dressing women of all shapes and sizes, I know that not everyone will fit into just one body-shape category. For example, I have clients who are column shaped but have a large bust; when most text books will tell you that column shapes have a small bust. And I’m aware that some people aren’t interested in being labeled or categorized (you’re looking at one of those people right here, it’s one of the reasons I avoid labeling my clients as style-types or seasons). However, I also know that some of us need lists and guidelines – it just makes life easier – and besides, when it comes to body shapes there just are certain principles that will help you to dress in a more flattering way.
So for those of you who want to gain a better understanding of which body-type best represents your shape, and are looking for some straightforward advice and guidance on dressing your figure, scroll down.
BUT! Before you disappear off into the world of hourglasses, columns, apples and pears, I want to make two important points:
- Don’t worry if you find you have a magical mishmash of a couple of different shapes. It’s normal. Just pick the one shape you have the most attributes in, click the box and head on over to the articles associated with that shape.
- When you’re reading the articles associated with your shape, please don’t see them as a set of rules to constrain yourself by. Instead, see them as guideline or baseline to help you become better acquainted with your shape, so you have the confidence to build develop and experiment with your own style.
